Job/Position DescriptionProvides Substance Abuse Services for mentally ill and mentally retarded patients who have a history of substance abuse. Just a few of the common illnesses of the patients to be served are: schizophrenia, depression, bipolar, and borderline disorders. Works with the referring Treatment Teams to assess the patients needs and writes objectives and progress notes in Clinician Record Keeping System (CRS) in accordance to the CRS Users guidelines. Because of the diverse group of patients served, objectives and progress notes shall be tailored to the specific population, gender and culture of same to ensure relevant treatment strategies. Completes assessments on each patient referred for services and coordinates patient schedule with Treatment Team contact person and patient schedule coordinator. Conducts substance abuse groups to patients referred. Participatory in Drug-Free Awareness Week activities and inservice training. Provides supervision to intern?s in accordance to NTSH and DSHS guidelines. Maintains competencies as described in the Policy and Procedure manual. Completes Social Learning Observations as assigned. Essential Job FunctionsFacilitate Substance Abuse Groups to persons referred for services while utilizing modalities which enhance the patients awareness of addiction and recovery in order to increase patients knowledge and skills.Works with Substance Abuse Counselor II and unit staff to facilitate support groups for MSU patients in order to educate patients about these resources and provide a support system.Complete COPSD assessments on patients as needed for Substance Abuse/COPSD Services by evaluating the patients functioning and insight thus enabling the Counselor to determine placement needs. Assessment process will be completed within 5 days of the Doctor?s order. This process includes patient interview and RadPlus documentation on to and the COPSD assessment form as appropriate. Patients not appropriate for placement shall be referred back to the treatment team.Evaluate patient needs and resources, make recommendations, coordinate placement with Treatment Team and complete necessary placement form by discussing existing resources among Counselors in order to provide services which are more specifically suited for each individual.Develop and record patient objectives and progress of group activities in RadPlus according to the Clinical Record System (CRS) Users Guide in order to communicate the patients progress to the Treatment Team.Submit continuing education applications and certificates in order to demonstrate acceptable proficiency in those areas critical to functioning as a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor according to the guidelines in the Substance Abuse Policy and Procedure manual.Provide clinical and administrative supervision to the MSU Substance Abuse Counselor I and COPSD Support staff position as needed in order to ensure a constant line of communication exists and to stay a tuned to skill acquisition of patient care. Incumbent is responsible for the complete intake process to include related clinical reminders. The incumbent will independently identify high-risk patients and provide the necessary substance abuse treatment. The incumbent conducts psychosocial assessments using the Addiction Severity Index (ASI) interview. The incumbent works with the veteran to develop treatment plans and offers psychosocial interventions and measures outcome during treatment plan review. The incumbent is skilled in providing individual and group psychotherapy and psycho educational groups. The incumbent routinely makes referrals to both internal and external resources to coordinate extended care and additional supportive resources for the Veteran and their family. The incumbent conducts psychosocial assessments using various assessment tools (see below) for substance dependence. The incumbent uses this information plus information from the Mental Health intake and related medical information in the medical records to create a treatment plan, with the veteran's assistance.
