Definition and Nature of the work:

Physical Therapist help patients suffering from injury or disease to restore function, improve mobility, relieve pain and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities.  In addition the therapist promotes patients’ overall fitness and health.  The Head Physical Therapist leads and supervises the agency physical therapy program and therapist aides. They lead in working with health-care teams including skilled nursing, including physicians, occupational therapist, and psychologists.    

Education and Training:

Applicants need bachelor’s degree and licensed graduates of an accredited program.  They must pass the state examinations and maintain continuing education as required by state.

Basic Job Description

Assess, plan, organize and participate in rehabilitative program that improves mobility, relieves pain, increase strength, and decrease or prevents deformity of patients suffering from disease or injury.

Part 1: Duties & Task:

  • Provide educational informational about physical therapy and physical therapists, injury prevention, ergonomics and ways to promote health.
  • Refer clients to community resources and services.
  • Plan, prepare and carry out individually designed programs of physical treatment to maintain, improve or restore physical functioning, alleviate pain and prevent physical dysfunction in patients.
  • Perform and document an initial exam, evaluating the data to identify problems and determine a diagnosis prior to patients.
  • Evaluate effects of treatment at various stages and adjust treatments to achieve maximum benefits.
  • Administer manual exercises, massage and/or traction to help relieve pain, increase the patients strength, and decrease or prevent deformity and crippling.
  • Instruct patient and family in treatment procedures to be continued at home.
  • Confer with the patient, medical practitioners and appropriate others to plan, implement and asses the intervention program.
  • Review physicians referrals and patients medical records to help determine diagnosis and physical therapy treatment required.
  • Record prognosis, treatment, response, and progress in patient’s chart or enter information into computer.
  • Obtain patient informed consent to proposed interventions.
  • Discharge patient from physical therapy when goals or projected outcome have been attained and provide for appropriate follow up care or referrals.
  • Test and Measure patients strength, motor development and function, sensory perception, functional capacity, and respiratory and circulatory efficiency and record data.
  • Identify and document goals, anticipated progress and plans for reevaluation.
  • Provide information to the patient about the proposed intervention, its material risks and expected benefits and any reasonable alternatives.
  • Inform the patient when diagnosis reveals finding outside their scope and refer to an appropriate Practitioner.
  • Direct and supervise supportive personnel assessing their competence, delegating specific task to them and establishing channels of communication.
  • Administer treatment involving application of physical agents, using equipment, moist packs, Ultraviolet, infrared lamps and ultrasound machines.
  • Teach physical therapy students as well as those in other health professions.
  • Evaluate, fit and adjust prosthetic and orthotic devices and recommend modification to orthotics. 
  • Conduct and support research and apply research findings to practice.
  • Participate in community and in community agencies activity and help formulate public policy.
  • Construct, repair, and maintain medical supportive devices.
  • Direct group rehabilitation activities as applies.

The Physical Therapist must have knowledge and understanding of the agencies goals and Mission statement. As lead therapist must be willing to cover any therapy needs and attend outside functions assigned.

Salaries vary with education, experience, and conditions of placement.  Benefits negotiated after 90 days positive review.
