We are hiring for the following:
Position: Psychiatrist
Schedule: PT, 12hrs/week
Location: San Benito County Jail
Responsibilities:
Comprehensive Psychiatric Care: Provide high-quality, evidence-based psychiatric care to inmates, including the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders.
Treatment Planning: Develop and implement individualized treatment plans for inmates, considering their unique psychological, social, and physical needs. Ensure treatment plans are in line with best practices and updated based on ongoing evaluations.
Medication Management: Prescribe, monitor, and adjust psychotropic medications for inmates as part of their treatment plan. Conduct regular medication reviews to assess efficacy, side effects, and patient compliance.
Psychiatric Evaluations: Conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations, including mental status exams and risk assessments, to diagnose mental health conditions and determine the appropriate course of treatment. Perform psychiatric evaluations for intake screenings as required.
Crisis Intervention: Provide psychiatric crisis intervention for inmates experiencing acute mental health episodes or emotional distress. Ensure timely and effective treatment to manage self-harm risks, suicidal ideation, and aggressive behaviors.
Therapeutic Interventions: Offer individual and group psychotherapy sessions, utilizing evidence-based therapeutic modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), or other psychotherapeutic techniques to address a range of psychological concerns.
Collaboration with Healthcare Team: Work closely with other healthcare professionals, including primary care physicians, psychologists, nurses, social workers, and correctional staff, to ensure coordinated care for patients with complex mental health and medical needs.
Behavioral Health Support: Provide mental health education to inmates, correctional staff, and other medical personnel, helping to reduce stigma surrounding mental health and improve understanding of psychiatric disorders and their treatment.
Documentation and Record Keeping: Accurately document psychiatric assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, medication management, and any changes in patient conditions. Maintain timely and accurate medical records in compliance with facility protocols, HIPAA, and legal requirements.
Mental Health Support for Special Populations: Provide specialized care for inmates with mental health conditions, including those with co-occurring substance use disorders, traumatic brain injuries, or histories of abuse. Address the mental health needs of high-risk or vulnerable populations such as those in segregation or those with suicidal ideation.
Risk Assessment and Management: Conduct regular risk assessments for suicidal ideation, violent behavior, and other potential threats to inmate or staff safety. Make recommendations for safety protocols and initiate involuntary treatment as necessary.
Compliance with Legal and Ethical Standards: Uphold the highest standards of psychiatric practice, including ensuring informed consent for treatment, respecting patient confidentiality, and adhering to ethical guidelines set forth by psychiatric governing bodies.
Psychiatric Consultation: Provide expert psychiatric consultation to other healthcare providers and correctional staff regarding mental health management and behavioral issues within the facility.
Quality Improvement and Compliance: Participate in continuous quality improvement (CQI) efforts, including audits, reviews, and feedback to improve patient care and ensure compliance with mental health laws, regulations, and facility standards.
Supervision and Mentorship: Provide supervision and guidance to psychiatric nurse practitioners, social workers, psychologists, and other behavioral health staff to ensure high-quality care and promote professional development.
Training and Education: Participate in training and educational initiatives for correctional staff, helping them recognize signs of mental illness and understand how to appropriately interact with inmates with mental health issues.
On-Call and After-Hours Care: Provide on-call services as needed, including after-hours psychiatric care for inmates experiencing psychiatric crises or severe distress.
Staff and Inmate Safety: Collaborate with correctional officers and facility leadership to ensure psychiatric services are provided in a safe and secure environment, respecting facility protocols and ensuring the well-being of both staff and inmates.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Active, unencumbered state/commonwealth certified medical license
Must have a valid and unrestricted DEA and NPI number
One (1) year of Clinical experience required
Board certified or board eligible
Active CPR/BLS certificate required (American Heart Association/American Red Cross guideline approved)
