The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) provides high-quality, evidence-based psychiatric care to incarcerated individuals, including mental health assessments, diagnosis, treatment planning, and psychotropic medication management. Working within a correctional healthcare setting, the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) collaborates with an interdisciplinary care team to ensure comprehensive mental health treatment and continuity of care. This role plays a critical part in addressing the unique mental health needs of the incarcerated population while ensuring compliance with facility protocols, legal regulations, and ethical standards.

How YOU can Make an Impact:

  • Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments, evaluations, and risk screenings to diagnose mental health conditions and determine appropriate levels of care.

  • Develop, implement, and manage individualized treatment plans for patients with mental health and co-occurring disorders.

  • Prescribe and manage psychotropic medications in accordance with evidence-based guidelines, clinical protocols, and collaborative care practices.

  • Monitor patient response to psychiatric medications and adjust treatment regimens as clinically indicated.

  • Provide crisis intervention and support for patients experiencing acute psychiatric symptoms, including suicidal ideation or self-injurious behaviors.

  • Collaborate closely with behavioral health staff, medical providers, and custody to support integrated care and ensure safety, continuity, and quality of services.

  • Participate in mental health multidisciplinary team meetings, treatment planning conferences, and case reviews.

  • Document all patient encounters, assessments, treatments, and progress notes accurately and timely in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) per regulatory and facility standards.

  • Maintain strict adherence to confidentiality requirements, HIPAA regulations, and ethical principles in psychiatric care.

  • Educate patients on their mental health diagnoses, treatment options, and medication adherence; promote patient engagement in their own care.

  • Support professional development of nursing and mental health staff by providing consultation, mentorship, and clinical guidance on psychiatric conditions and care approaches.

  • Provide on-call psychiatric coverage as assigned to meet facility and patient care needs, including after-hours support when necessary.

  • Promote a trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, and culturally competent approach to mental health care.

  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives related to psychiatric care, mental health documentation, and outcomes monitoring.

  • Maintain professional licensure and certifications and participate in continuing education to remain current in psychiatric and correctional healthcare practices.

  • Follow all facility policies regarding safety, infection control, security, and emergency response.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

What we Ask of YOU:

  • A current, valid, and unrestricted state license, certification, and/or credential authorizing practice in the applicable clinical role (e.g., MD, DO, DDS, DMD, NP, PA, RN, LPN, LMHP, etc.) is required.

  • A High School diploma or GED is required.

  • Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program with a concentration or certification in Psychiatric-Mental Health (PMHNP) is required.

  • A current, valid DEA registration with authority to prescribe controlled substances, including psychotropic medications, is required.

  • Board certification as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) by a nationally recognized certifying body (e.g., ANCC) is strongly preferred.

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of clinical experience as an NP, with at least 2 years focused on psychiatric or behavioral health care; correctional healthcare or work with underserved populations is highly preferred.

  • Experience in psychiatric assessments, medication management, crisis intervention, and interdisciplinary collaboration is essential.

  • Active CPR/BLS certification required (American Heart Association or American Red Cross guidelines).

  • Working knowledge of HIPAA, mental health standards of care, and applicable federal and state behavioral health regulations.
