Job Summary

Job Title: Art Therapist
Location: Children's Memorial Hermann
Schedule: Monday Friday | One holiday and one weekend shift per year

Position Summary:
We are seeking a compassionate and creative Art Therapist to join our dynamic team of therapists working with pediatric patients and their families. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a collaborative environment that values emotional expression, flexibility, and holistic patient care. The ideal candidate will have experience with children, be adaptable with their caseload, and bring an engaging therapeutic presence to our hospital setting.

Key Responsibilities:
Provide art therapy services for pediatric patients ranging from toddlers to teens, as well as caregivers (e.g., NICU parents).
Manage a varied caseload, including patients with chronic illness and complex medical needs.
Accept and respond to consults from various hospital units.
Facilitate both individual and group therapy sessions.
Collaborate closely with other creative arts therapists, including a team of three art therapists and music therapy staff.
Contribute to interdisciplinary care planning and communication.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Masters Degree in Art Therapy from an accredited institution.
Licensure/Certification:
oRegistered Art Therapist (ATR) required.
oBoard Certified Art Therapist (ATR-BC) preferred.
oCPR certification required.
oMust obtain ATR or ATR-BC within the first year if not already held.

Experience:
oOpen to new graduates who completed an internship in a hospital setting.
oAt least one (1) year of experience as an Art Therapist preferred.
oExperience working with children or in a pediatric setting is highly preferred.

Skills:
oFlexible, adaptable, and comfortable with shifting workloads.
oStrong interpersonal and communication skills.
oAbility to work both independently and collaboratively in a team setting.

Interview Process:
1.Phone screening with hiring manager (2030 minutes).
2.If selected, a second interview with manager and another Art Therapist.
3.Panel interview with interdisciplinary team members.
4.Final step includes a job shadow and facility tour.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Masters Degree, Art Therapy.

Licenses/Certifications: Must be a registered art therapist (ATR) or board certified (ATR-BC) through The Art Therapy Credentials Board within the first year of hire, CPR certification required.

Experience / Knowledge / Skills:

  • One (1) year of experience as an Art Therapist preferred.
  • Clinical experience in treating individuals who have experienced trauma, physical or emotional, or changes in body image or physical functioning is preferred
  • Spanish-bilingual preferred
  • Experience in treating patients in a wide age range from school aged to adolescence preferred
  • Able to work evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime as necessary
  • Able to demonstrate competency and a basic knowledge of age specific criteria in the patient populations served within the introductory period

Principal Accountabilities

  • Provides therapeutic art interventions to enhance expression of feelings, increase the individuals self-awareness and expression, and promote positive coping of the health care experience to individual patients, groups of patients and patients family members.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the art interventions provided, and make changes and adaptations as appropriate.
  • Serves as an educational resource on using therapeutic art activities with children and youth in the health care environment.
  • Identifies appropriate art resources and maintain their safety and accessibility.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary meetings and work in a collaborative way with other healthcare disciplines.
  • Clear communication skills (oral and written).
  • Possesses ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks.
  • Competency assessed at least annually.
  • Evaluates and treats patients according to appropriate age group and diagnosis.
  • Maintains all essential documentation.
  • Presents relevant special topics in professional literature at clinic meetings, grand rounds, conferences, university settings and meetings as delegated or requested by the faculty.
  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
  • Demonstrates commitment to caring for every member of our community by creating compassionate and personalized experiences. Models Memorial Hermanns service standards by providing safe, caring, personalized and efficient experiences to patients and colleagues.
