The Staff Phycologist is a key part of the Universitys commitment to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of its medical students. As an embedded clinician within the School of Medicine (SOM), the person in this role will serve as a vital resource, ensuring that CAPS is effectively meeting the unique and complex needs of SOM students. Primary responsibilities include the delivery of direct clinical services (individual and group therapy, crisis intervention, and telehealth services), offering consultation to faculty and staff, and the development of outreach, wellness, and educational programming. This is an independent and highly self-directed role. The embedded clinician must be proactive in building and managing their own clinical caseload, identifying and reducing barriers to care, and responding skillfully and flexibly to the mental health needs of the medical student community. The successful candidate will be skilled at navigating complex institutional systems and adept at building and sustaining collaborative relationships. Additional duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Establishing a visible, approachable, and trusted presence within the SOM

  • Actively engaging in building a clinical caseload through outreach and responsive communication

  • Initiating and leading programs that promote a culture of wellness within the SOM student body

  • Providing consultation and training to SOM faculty and staff regarding student mental health concerns

  • Maintaining strong, collaborative communication with both the CAPS team and SOM leadership

  • Some evening hours (at minimum 2 days) are required

Work Interactions

Direct service to students, consultations to deans and faculty regarding student issues, consultation to other CAPS staff. The clinician will also collaborate closely with deans, student affairs professionals, and hospital/psychiatric staff to create a comprehensive network of support for students.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Doctorate in clinical or counseling psychology or a related field, or an MSW, or LPC.

  • Licensure in the District of Columbia as a social worker, professional counselor or psychologist within one year of start date.

  • Preference for previous college mental health experience, as well as demonstrated experience working with the issues noted in the position description, as well as with healthcare professionals and trainees.

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$66,783.00 - $126,720.23

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidates individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the Universitys business needs and external factors.
