Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary:

This position provides Activity Therapy Education/Treatment for Residents on the Sexual Predator Treatment Program Units, in order to fulfill the mission/vision of Larned State Hospital. The person in this position schedules Activity Therapy sessions and provides Activity Therapy services. The Activity Therapist must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on the Sexual Predator Treatment Program Units age 19 to 85+. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patients' status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the unit and department policies and procedures.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

Provides Therapy Services

  • Plan and implement Therapeutic, Leisure, and Educational Activity Therapy Sessions.
  • Provide Activity Therapy sessions as assigned.
  • Follow security policies and procedures for Security Units.
  • Plan, coordinate, and implement special events.
  • Assist and participate at special events as assigned
  • Assists with transporting residents to activities when needed.

Planning and Preparation for Sessions

  • Plan Activity Therapy sessions designed to meet the needs of adult residents on S.P.T.P.
  • Develop appropriate age activities for adult residents.
  • Gather and obtain needed materials for therapy sessions.
  • Implement care and maintenance of equipment and supplies as needed.
  • Notify supervisor of need for additional assistance in maintenance or repair of equipment.
  • Maintain inventories and carry out sharps control procedures according to policy.

Documentation

  • Write progress notes and complete rosters as required for assigned caseload and/or groups.
  • Complete resident schedule, paperwork, and write progress notes on patients after Activity Therapy Assessment is completed.
  • Complete incident reports and necessary operational forms.

Maintain Professional Competence

  • Attend In-service training that is relevant to current job assignments.
  • Review resources for new ideas for use in Activity Therapy sessions.
  • Maintain credentials and licenses as required by job description. (First Aid, CPR,CPI).
  • Attend Activity Therapy and SSP Department meetings as scheduled.
  • Attend supervisory meetings as scheduled.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Four years of experience in therapeutic recreation or one of the creative arts or therapy disciplines such as art, dance/movement or music therapy. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.
  • CPR Certification and Red Cross First Aide Certification within 60 days of employment and maintain certification throughout employment.
  • CPI Certification within one month of employment and maintain certification throughout employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field, such as, but not limited to, vocational rehabilitation, industrial arts, recreation therapy, art therapy, music therapy, physical education, psychology, communications, horticulture therapy, education and criminal justice. Experience working with a targeted population may be substituted for education
  • Prefer experience in working with psychiatric patients or offenders.

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements:

  • Ability to pass a KBI background and pre-employment drug test.
