Job Description
Position Summary
The Behavior Specialist supports students with behavioral, social-emotional, and mental health needs across a K-12 school district. This role focuses on developing and implementing behavior intervention strategies, supporting and coaching staff, and fostering a safe, inclusive learning environment. The behavior specialist often works across multiple grade levels and will serve multiple schools in collaboration with other personnel.
Qualifications
Master's degree in School Psychology, Counseling, Applied Behavior Analysis, Special Education or related field required
Certification/licensure (e.g., BCBA, school counselor, or similar) preferred
Experience working with children or adolescents in school or behavioral settings for a minimum of five years
Experience with FBAs, BIPs, and trauma-informed practices
Knowledge of public school law, ethics and standards of practice for School Psychology
Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skillsFamiliarity with multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) and response to intervention (RTI)
Ability to be self-directed, responsible and complete work within prescribed timelines
Ability to work collaboratively with all school stakeholders
Key Responsibilities
Conduct informal Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) for students with challenging behaviors
Help teachers develop and implement informal Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs)
Provide direct behavioral support and coaching to students (individual and small group)
Support crisis intervention and de-escalation when needed
Coach teachers in handling students with internalizing and externalizing behaviors
Provide ongoing consultation and problem-solving support
Coach staff to collect and analyze behavioral data to monitor student progress
Maintain documentation in compliance with IEPs, 504 Plans, and district/state policies
Participate in IEP meetings and multidisciplinary teams
Maintain professional skills through attending relevant in-service trainings, reading current literature and professional memberships
Perform related duties as assigned
