Definition

This position is a full-time, in-house public safety mental health professional within the Wellness Bureau. The Clinician works in close collaboration with the Director of the Wellness Bureau to deliver clinical services to all department members, their families, and department retirees. The role carries a critical responsibility of cultivating a culture of psychological, emotional, social, spiritual, and physical wellness across the agency. Candidates must hold a valid, active license under NRS Title 54, Chapter 641, 641A, or 641B.240.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is a Sheriff-appointed classification and is not subject to the competitive requirements of the Civil Service Rules of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

Minimum Qualifications/Position-Specific Conditions

The Strongest Candidates Will Bring:

  • Two years of experience in public safety mental health to include crisis intervention and psychological debriefs, with demonstrated first responder cultural competency.
  • Possession of a valid clinical license in good standing under NRS Title 54, Chapter 641, 641A, or 641B.240.
  • Three or more years of experience with public speaking and professional presentations.
  • Three or more years of experience administering and interpreting culturally appropriate mental health assessments.
  • Flexibility and willingness to deploy across area commands, outlying locations, and wherever a clinical need arises within the agency.
  • A collaborative disposition and the capacity to work effectively alongside Peer Support staff and fellow Clinicians.
  • Possession of or the ability to obtain a valid Nevada driver license.
  • (Preferred but not required) specialized training in one or more of the following evidence-based interventions: Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Brainspotting, Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), Prolonged Exposure (PE), or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

Conditions of Employment

  • Be a citizen/naturalized citizen or permanent resident alien without conditions on status of the United States of America.
  • Be at least 18 years old by the closing date of the announcement.
  • Participate in the LVMPD Mental Wellness Program.
  • Personal Appearance:While on duty, and/or representing the Department, uniformed or otherwise, all Department employees will be neat and clean in their appearance in public. Employees are prohibited from attaching, affixing, or displaying objects, articles or jewelry on or through the nose, tongue, eyebrow or other exposed body part, except the ears for females, while on duty. Employees are prohibited from stretching or "gauging" their earlobes. All jewelry implants will not be exposed or visible while on duty. Tattoos or branding will not be exposed or visible while on duty and/or representing the Department. Such markings must be covered by clothing. Markings that cannot be covered by clothing will be covered using neutral-toned bandages or patches. Makeup is not permissible to cover a tattoo. Tattoos or branding anywhere on the body that promote racism/discrimination, indecency, extremist or supremacist philosophies, lawlessness, violence, or contain sexually explicit material are prohibited.
  • Comply with department policy 4.116 Driving/Vehicle Procedures, Department Take-Home Vehicles, if assigned a take-home vehicle.
  • Maintain a valid, appropriate Nevada driver license.
  • Maintain a valid license to practice social work issued by the Nevada State Board of Social Work.
  • Respond to employees in crisis 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Work any shift, weekends, and holidays.
  • Crisis scenes within the community; varying weather and urban and rural conditions while traveling to offsite locations; office and filed environment; work with computers.

If you successfully complete the above selection process, you will undergo a thorough background investigation, including a polygraph exam. A polygraph examination can be stressful and may affect existing medical or psychological conditions or ongoing treatment. Candidates areencouraged to consult with their personal physicians to discuss whether the polygraph will affect a condition or treatment and then follow the guidance of their medical professional.

The background investigation takes approximately 90 to 120 days to complete. You must also meet the LVMPD Hiring Standards.
