Job Description

Sierra House is seeking a compassionate, energetic Residential Counselor/Security to work with youth and young adults 18 to 25 and their children as they learn independent living skills, such as cooking, cleaning, job seeking, and budgeting skills. The Residential Counselor (Overnight) is responsible for maintaining a safe, supportive, and structured environment for shelter residents during overnight hours. This position provides supervision, crisis

response, and basic support services while ensuring compliance with shelter policies and procedures.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities*

The Residential Assistant(s) performs the following duties:

Provide overnight supervision of residents to ensure safety, security, and well-being

Conduct routine checks of the facility and resident areas throughout the shift

Respond calmly and appropriately to emergencies, crises, or resident needs

Enforce shelter rules, curfews, and overnight policies in a respectful and trauma-informed manner

Document incidents, resident interactions, and shift activities in logbooks or electronically

Assist with resident intakes, room assignments, and transitions as needed

De-escalate conflicts and provide emotional support when residents are distressed

Ensure cleanliness and order in common areas during overnight hours

Communicate relevant information to day staff during shift handoff

Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times

Maintains a professional relationship with families, case managers, guardians, doctors and other interested parties

Assists with fire drills, health and safety issues as needed

Perform light administrative tasks and ensures residents sign in and out
