POSITION SUMMARY INFORMATION: DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS
Position Overview : In this role, you will provide psychiatric evaluations, mental health treatment, crisis intervention services, and behavioral healthcare oversight for residents within the detention facility while ensuring services are delivered in accordance with government detention standards, clinical protocols, and applicable healthcare regulations. You will assess, diagnose, and treat residents experiencing mental health disorders, behavioral concerns, emotional distress, and psychiatric emergencies while working collaboratively with behavioral health personnel, physicians, nurses, detention staff, and facility leadership. This position requires advanced clinical expertise, strong decision-making abilities, professionalism, and the ability to provide effective psychiatric care within a secure detention healthcare environment while maintaining confidentiality and high standards of patient care.
Responsibilities :
- Conduct psychiatric evaluations, behavioral health assessments, mental status examinations, and diagnostic reviews for residents presenting with psychiatric or emotional health concerns.
- Diagnose and treat a wide range of mental health disorders including depression, anxiety, trauma-related conditions, psychotic disorders, mood disorders, and substance-related behavioral concerns.
- Develop and implement individualized psychiatric treatment plans, therapeutic interventions, crisis management strategies, and continuity of care recommendations based on clinical findings and resident needs.
- Prescribe, adjust, and monitor psychiatric medications while evaluating treatment effectiveness, side effects, medication compliance, and potential drug interactions.
- Respond to psychiatric emergencies, suicide prevention incidents, self-harm concerns, behavioral crises, and resident mental health emergencies requiring immediate clinical intervention.
- Coordinate psychiatric services with physicians, advanced practice providers, behavioral health personnel, nurses, detention officers, outside specialists, and healthcare leadership to ensure continuity of care.
- Review behavioral observations, treatment records, medication histories, healthcare documentation, and clinical reports to support accurate diagnosis and treatment decisions.
- Maintain accurate psychiatric documentation, treatment notes, medication records, behavioral health reports, and clinical summaries in compliance with HIPAA requirements and facility standards.
- Participate in intake screenings, multidisciplinary treatment planning, behavioral health case reviews, chronic mental health management activities, and resident wellness assessments.
- Ensure psychiatric services comply with government detention standards, behavioral healthcare regulations, clinical guidelines, and facility operational policies.
- Support audits, inspections, accreditation reviews, quality improvement initiatives, mortality reviews, and compliance assessments related to psychiatric and behavioral healthcare services.
- Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, strong clinical judgment, effective communication, and leadership while supporting safe and effective psychiatric healthcare operations within the detention facility.
Qualifications :
- Must possess a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited institution.
- Must possess a valid, unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Arizona with no pending disciplinary actions.
- Must possess an active DEA registration and Arizona controlled substance dispensing license.
- Must possess a current CPR/BLS certification.
- Must possess board certification or board eligibility from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN).
- Must possess relevant experience in public health, inpatient psychiatric facilities, or a forensic/correctional setting (often highly preferred or required depending on the specific facility).
- Must be able to provide proof of citizenship or legal US work authorization.
- If prior active-duty military, must provide copies of DD214(s) showing discharge condition.
- Must consent to fingerprinting.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent
- Clean criminal record and ability to pass a comprehensive background check and security screening.
- Ability to pass a preemployment medical assessment and drug screening.
- Excellent communication, observation, and report-writing skills.
- Ability to remain calm and effective under pressure and in high-stress situations.
- Ability to work flexible shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Work Environment :
Employees may be exposed to extreme cold or hot weather conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noise.
Physical Requirements :
Employees may be required to remain in a stationary position, stand, push, pull, climb, kneel, crawl, balance, squat, bend, and reach. Employees may be also required to use gear to move items around, including, but not limited to, carts and dollies. Employees may also be occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 49 pounds.
