The Mental Health and Wellbeing Therapist delivers brief, solution-focused mental health support within a stepped care model to ensure students receive timely, tailored assistance through Mental Health and Wellbeing Services. Reporting to the Manager of Mental Health & Accessibility Services, the incumbent will provide individual psychotherapy, facilitate group therapy, and lead psycho-educational workshops, all within a measure-based care framework using tools like Greenspace.
A key contributor to Student Success Services, the MHW Therapist bridges mental health support with students’ academic and personal growth, addressing challenges that impact their journey. By collaborating with faculty, staff, and campus-wide initiatives, the role ensures students are connected to the college community and feel supported at all levels.
In addition to direct services, the MHW Therapist contributes to the implementation of mental health policies, enhances access to resources, and fosters a culture of well-being that emphasizes resilience, inclusion, and belonging. This holistic approach helps students overcome barriers, thrive in their academic and personal lives, and contribute to a positive, inclusive campus environment.
Qualifications:
- Masters Degree or equivalent in the field of social work or counselling psychology
- Must be registered and in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) or College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO)
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience providing direct mental health support and wellness programming, particularly in a post-secondary, clinical, or community setting
- Proven experience working with adult learners and emerging adults, recognizing the unique mental health challenges they face during critical developmental transitions
- Demonstrated experience in case management, including coordinating referrals to community resources and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams
- Strong understanding of mental health legislation, accessibility policies, and best practices in student support services
- Experience delivering psychoeducational programming, resilience-building initiatives, and brief intervention strategies
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Demonstrated computer literacy
- In-person position, must be able to reliably commute between North Bay campuses and agency(ies) site(s)
Responsibilities:
- Provide one-on-one psychotherapy focusing on student mental health issues (e.g., anxiety, depression, trauma)
- Utilize evidence-based modalities (CBT, SFBT, mindfulness) tailored to individual needs
- Deliver crisis intervention and stabilization for urgent mental health concerns
- Conduct comprehensive assessments to identify students’ mental health challenges and strengths
- Develop and regularly update individualized care plans, aligning with students' personal and academic goals
- Maintain accurate, confidential records per legal and institutional standards (e.g., PHIPA)
- Document interactions and track progress using clinical management tools
- Identify need for specialized care and refer students to appropriate internal/external resources
- Collaborate with community mental health organizations for seamless transitions in care
- Engage in clinical supervision for case discussions and skill enhancement
- Participate in ongoing education and training to stay current with therapeutic practices
- Teach coping mechanisms and resilience strategies to support student self-management
- Foster self-awareness and personal growth in students
- Design and facilitate group therapy sessions addressing common mental health challenges
- Lead psycho-educational workshops to develop skills (e.g., stress management, resilience)
- Provide immediate support during student mental health crises and conduct risk assessments
- Collaborate with campus departments for safety and crisis management
