Job Description:
The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) is seeking to hire a Nurse Practitioner to provide psychiatric health care services. Selected candidate will be joining our staff of Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and other health care professionals.

DUTIES:
Under the direct supervision of a licensed psychiatrist, performs varying levels of medical work in treating patients with psychiatric conditions or administering a program or major clinical unit at a diagnostic and evaluation center. Incumbents independently conduct appropriate examinations and recommend proper diagnoses and treatment. Must participate in interdisciplinary group discussions involving patient care.
Makes ward rounds and periodic inspections to evaluate the care and treatment of patients and to discuss, observe and advise on the treatment of unusual or difficult cases.
Responsible for diagnosis of illness and the determination and administration of treatment to be used on patients.
Is an interdisciplinary team member who confers with, advises, and instructs members of the medical and support staff on the care, treatment, and prognosis of patients.
Conducts psychotherapeutic interviews as well as individual and group therapy and evaluates the progress of treatment.
Conducts and/or participates in staff conferences for the discussion of the diagnosis, treatment, parole, and discharge of patients.
Develops short and long-range program and treatment goals and objectives.
Requirements / Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: Successful completion of an accredited program for Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner. Incumbents must have a current, valid license as a Registered Nurse and be certified as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Nebraska.
Preferred Qualifications: Has advanced training in psychiatric assessments and treatment.
Other: Must possess a valid driver's license. Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: medical exam, and at a randomly announced time, pass a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid NE Corrections Training Program.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of: the development and implementation of a plan of management and care; therapeutic diets; the setting of a state institution and the rules, regulations and policies inherent in such a setting; physical, occupational and recreational therapies.
Ability to: understand the health problems of elderly patients/clients; remain flexible and receptive to new approaches; maintain professionalism and objectivity under stress.
Skill in: counseling individual patients/clients and their families; interviewing patients/clients and documenting medical histories.
