Founded in 1773, Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg, Virginia, has the honor of being the first public facility in the United States constructed solely for the care and treatment of the mentally ill. Today, our state-of-the-art campus is situated on 500 acres with two patient care buildings and a staff of over 900 caring for 300 adult patients. Eastern State Hospital is part of the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) system, and is accredited by the Joint Commission.

Eastern State Hospital is federally designated as a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA). Benefits of this designation include participation in the Virginia State Loan Repayment Program and the Conrad 30 Waiver Program.
