Mental Health Therapist Job Details Position Type Full Time Job Shift Day Job Category Health Care Description SUMMARY The Mental Health Counselor will counsel individuals and groups to promote optimum mental health. Helping individuals deal with thoughts of suicide; addictions and substance abuse; family, parenting, and marital problems; stress management; problems with self-esteem; and issues associated with aging and mental and emotional health. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each responsibility satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability to be successful. DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to the following) + Counsel clients and patients, individually and in group sessions, to assist in overcoming dependencies, adjusting to life, and making changes. + Maintain confidentiality of records relating to clients' treatment. + Guide clients in the development of skills and strategies to address barriers. + Encourage clients to express their feelings and to discuss what is happening in their lives and helps them develop insight into themselves and their relationships. + Collect information about clients through interviews, observations, and tests. Qualifications EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE + Social Worker or Mental Health Counselor: Licensed as an LISW or LMHC in the State of Iowa by date of hire. License must be maintained as a condition of employment. SKILLS AND ABILITIES + Extensive knowledge of evidence and theory based mental health counseling in assessment, crisis, individual, case management, and group. + Extensive ability to assess, manage, and ensure high quality mental health counseling, trauma, and crisis management. + Extensive proficiency in planning and delivering psycho-educational outreach programs and consultation services. + Working knowledge of providing training and supervision to trainees. + Expert proficiency in the application of communication techniques and relationship building skills that develop the ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and collaborative manner. + Ability to foster a welcoming and respectful workplace environment while recognizing personal differences. Ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and respectful manner while appreciating the importance of a workforce that benefits from the talents of all people across multiple characteristics. + Working proficiency with office and tele-mental health support tools and electronic medical records software (e.g., word processing, email, presentation software and spreadsheets, electronic health records) specifically Microsoft Office Suite and EMR documentation. + Thorough understanding of human behavior, various behavioral and affective disorders, and the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of these disorders. + Organizational skills required to manage complex, deadline-driven paperwork including billing and insurance claims.
