An Overview

This position qualifies for a signing bonus of $3,000. The Therapist Supervisor provides administrative and clinical supervision to a team of geriatric mental health Therapists and case workers. Provides psychotherapy, clinical evaluation, outreach, and prevention and early intervention services to geriatric mental health consumers and oversees the provision of these services provided by the Geriatric MH Team in Aging and Adult Services. Supervises and assigns the work of Therapists who provide individual and group counseling, and mental health case management, develop and coordinate individual service plans, and obtain services for consumers. Provides consultation and training to Family Services Workers who conduct Adult Protective Services investigations. Tracks waitlist information. Collaborates with other community agencies for older adults, as a member of multi-disciplinary teams. Acts as a field instructor for students working towards a masters degree in social work.

What You Should Bring

The ideal candidate should have extensive knowledge of clinical supervision of other professional or paraprofessional staff, and extensive knowledge of geriatric mental health with understanding of the interaction of the aging body and mind and knowledge of the system of care in the City of Alexandria. The Supervisor must have a thorough knowledge of assessment and current treatment interventions for older individuals who have a mental illness and/or co-occurring substance abuse disorder, psychopharmacology, and crisis intervention.

The Opportunity

  • Oversees older adult mental health services team; Provides clinical and administrative supervision to a team of 3 Senior Therapists, three Social Workers, and MSW Interns to ensure highest quality geriatric mental health services.
  • Provides expert emergency and crisis intervention services to consumers and citizens and consults to other agencies and service providers in various emergency/crisis situations, and oversees other staff providing these services.
  • Prepares reports for court proceedings, and oversees other staff that provides court assessments, represents the Department, and testifies as an Expert Witness regarding geriatric mental health on behalf of consumers, citizens and City agencies.
  • Responds to and assigns cases for emergency consultations , conducts clinical intakes and evaluations, competency evaluations, outreach, consultation, prevention services and formulates diagnoses and treatment plans for mental health consumers. Tracks waitlist, referrals and assignments and oversees the quality of these services for the team.
  • Assures teams clinical documentation meets standards for State licensing, Medicaid, State reporting and CARF and the DCHS/CSB policies and requirements, including MAP agreements are current to ensure maximum reimbursement.
  • Assures program productivity and quality are maintained by monitoring performance contract reports, conducting peer review activities, analyzing consumer satisfaction surveys, informal and formal feedback and external reviews and working with Department QI staff to assist team with implementation of programs and services to meet needs.
  • Responsible for interviewing, hiring, and evaluation and discipline of staff. Ensures staff coverage. Conducts regular staff meetings for case coordination and communicating program policies and procedures.
  • Serves as the designated Expert Consultant /Older Adult mental health representative for Regional Older Adult Facility and Treatment (RAFT) Program, Aging & Alcohol Awareness Group on the regional and state training committee and other regional and state projects as needed.
  • Provides psychoeducational and informational trainings regarding older adult mental health, including needs and special topics for older adults, care providers and the community.
  • Collaborates with other City and community, agencies for older adults, as a member of multi-disciplinary teams, including Hoarding Task Force, and other City/Community projects for older adults as needed, and supervises other staff designated to City and Community collaborative efforts.
  • Participates in Quality Assurance Committee meetings, as well as Supervisor meeting for Adult Services, and DSHS, provides current leadership decisions and changes in policies or procedures to staff.
  • Coordinates older adult guardianship proceedings in conjunction with Adult Protective Services Supervisor and other committee members.
  • Other duties as assigned.

About the Department

The Center for Adult Services (CAS) provides programs and services in Aging; Adult Protective Services; Clinical & Emergency Services; and Community & Residential Support Services for seniors and for persons with mental illness, intellectual disabilities and substance use disorders. CAS provides compassionate and effective person-centered services based on best practices. Our teams support self-determination, safety and recovery for Alexandria residents affected by abuse, neglect, mental illness, intellectual disabilities and substance abuse disorders.

Master's degree in Human Services; two years post-graduate work experience in providing direct clinical services to clients having psychiatric and/or substance abuse disorders; at least two years post-master's experience providing diagnostic evaluations, assessments, and crisis intervention. Licensed in Virginia as an LCSW, LPC, LSATP, or Clinical Psychologist OR is license eligible (has completed all required education and supervision as required by applicable board) as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner (LSATP), or Clinical Psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia at the time of appointment; if license eligible, the employee must obtain Virginia license at the first available opportunity, but no later than one year after appointment. Good driving record/background check; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

License as an LPC, LCSW, LSAP, or Clinical Psychologist in Virginia at the time of appointment; three years supervisory experience, gerontology certification and experience, multilingual.

This position requires the successful completion of pre-employment background checks including but not limited to: FBI/Federal Records Check; VA State Child Abuse/Neglect Registry; Medicare/Medicaid Fraud Database; Verification of education/certifications; and Driver's license.

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00AM 4:30PM. Telework or compressed schedule possible upon completion of probationary period .
