Perform and monitor patient care in a mental health setting. Psychiatric Registered Nurses (RNs)—also called mental health nurses—assess patient behavior and functioning, track and update medical records, and collaborate with other mental health team members to optimize care plans. They may also be asked to administer certain treatments, including medication, as directed by psychiatrists and psychologists.
Because they may need to communicate with patients about highly personal and sensitive information, psychiatric RNs need to be empathetic, compassionate, and emotionally stable. Most of these healthcare professionals are employed in psychiatric hospitals, though some work for outreach programs and private practices/clinics.
